A Vancouverite’s journey to financial freedom.
Congrats on the new job and welcome back to the face of the Earth. ![]()
Glad to hear you’ve landed a new job. I was wondering about your radio silence but had no doubt that you’ll find something soon. Welcome back and looking forward to your posts ![]()
Congratulations on the new job. It is good to see you posting again!
Best Wishes,

Congratulations. I don’t update my resume for ten years now either. Maybe I should do that just in case…
I work in enterprise software development in Vancouver. I’ve been at it for roughly 8 years and I’m thinking of taking a break (using my investment cashflow) in ~5-10 years.
Sometimes I worry if I take a break then I could lose touch. The industry has a fast pace, but that’s not what concerns me. Its more the perception that an old developer can’t keep up (i.e. reverse age discrimination).
Anyways, I’d like to hear your experiences. Since its way off topic to the blog, feel free to send me an email.
VM
Thank you guys.
Hey VM, so far I haven’t noticed any prejudice against older computer geeks.
I’d put oversea workers at the top my obstacle list as far as returning to the workforce. Check out www.getafreelancer.com. How can I compete with oversea programmers who essentially perform the same tasks for peanuts? High oil prices may reduce physical shipments, but they don’t stop 1’s and 0’s from invading our territory.
[FJG] How can I compete with oversea programmers who essentially perform the same tasks for peanuts?
[VM] I refer to an idea I call a “career moat”, taken from Buffett’s “moat” concept (i.e. a competitive advantage). In software development, my “career moat” is a deep understanding of the business I work for. Lots of developers specialize in knowing how to code well. I specialize in knowing the requirements of my business and I happen to have the skills to deliver the code as well.
So far its worked out ok for me. If all goes well, this “career moat” should only be needed for a few more years. ![]()
Hey FJG, what type of software programming are you involved with specifically?
Hi Jordan - I typically write back-end stuff like MS SQL and .NET, but more recently on ASP.NET.
I just started working on the Research In Motion BlackBerry website through my new employer. It’s a pretty slick website, although my finger prints aren’t all over it yet. I think a little Jungle theme would do it good. ![]()
