How Much Is Your Blog Worth?

Yesterday I celebrated Financial Jungle’s first birthday by renewing both the domain and the hosting service for another year. Yes, you have to put up with me for a little longer. And with your support, the blog has earned $170 in advertising revenue and cost $35 in various expenses. While I’m happy to have made $135 in net income after a year of blogging, the real pot-of-gold was unveiled by this wicked widget from Business Opportunities Weblog.

Financial Jungle is worth $32,743.32 a la Dane Carlson’s “How Much Is Your Blog Worth?” widget. Personally, I doubt my blog deserves such a lofty price tag, but I’m willing to part with it for $10,000. :)

Just for fun, here’s how other personal financial blogs measure up:

Get Rich Slowly - $1,029,156.42
Millionaire Mommy Next Door - $250,655.76
Consumerism Commentary - $219,606.06
Million Dollar Journey - $160,329.36
The Dividend Guy Blog - $149,038.56
Four Pillars - $130,408.74
Give Me Back My Five Bucks - $96,536.34
Financial Blogger - $79,600.14
Canadian Capitalist - $45,727.74
Canadian Dream Free At 45 - $45,163.20
Money Coach - $30,485.16
Dividends4Life - $29,356.08
Growth In Value - $8,468.10
Michael James On Money - $7,903.56
Nabloid - $7,903.56
SteadyHand - $4,516.32
Thicken My Wallet - $1,129.08
Triaging My Way To Financial Success - $1,129.08
Where Does All My Money Go - $564.54
Money Gardener - $0.00
Middle Class Millionaire - $0.00
Canadian Financial DIY = $0.00

One obvious peculiarity is Canadian Capitalist’s worth. Only $47k? I’d expect it to price at around $150k. A few other blogs I tried came up with $0.00 probably due to absences of Technorati accounts. So take this with a grain of salt, as I honestly don’t know the formula behind this widget.

It is a fun widget isn’t it. I had a go with my blog and found that one of mine is worth $25,986..like you I wouldn’t mind taking $10,000 for it!!

If you find the guy with the checkbook, let me know! :) Thanks for the mention.

Best Wishes,
D4L

Thanks for the mention FJ. $160k for MDJ hey.. hmm.. maybe it’s time to shop the market? :)

Hey MDJ: are you going to count this figure for your net worth reports now? :)

I’ve seen that widget before and entered in my URL to see my blog’s worth. Phooey! It doesn’t account for Good Will, which in my case easily adds another five bucks… :)

I’m not sure. It’s ages since I even bothered with Technorati. I believe the calculator depends on how many links are reported by them.

I think I figured out why. I don’t bother to ping Technorati. The last ping was two years back.
Here’s my question though: Is it worth to keep Technorati pinged?

The “blog worth” page reports I’m worth $40,646.88…but my “better half” thinks I’m worth waaaayyy more. Giggle.

Canadian Capitalist: I only ping Technorati cause I keep default Wordpress settings. But seriously, when was the last time you visited Technorati?

WhereDoesAllMyMoneyGo – Blogs are very illiquid assets. Might want to close your eyes if you mark-to-market your site. :D I suppose that applies to all of us. Can we sue anyone?

Canadian Capitalist – I managed to fish up the configuration setting to auto-ping Technorati. From your WordPress Admin window, visit to the “Options” tab, and select the “Writing” section. In the Update Services memo box, include the following:
http://rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ping

[Edit]

Hey FJ,

Thanks for the mention…If I ever decide to sell I may seek another opinion though;)

P.S - Just for the record i don’t have a Technorati account.

Cheers,
MCM

Thanks for including me in the list. I wonder if the $7900 that my blog is supposedly worth is based on just the existing posts or if it assumes an indefinite stream of future posts. My guess is that it includes future posts. I’m not likely to sell my writing services indefinitely into the future for a mere $7900. I think I’ll just continue blogging as long as I’m having fun.

Thats a intersting widget, it says mine would be sold for 2,888. I would sell it for a million though. Check it out.

My blog is worth $96.5K? Damn. Anyone want to buy it?

thanks for the worthless link!

LOL. Too funny, MG!

If I knew! I just accepted an offer for 50K…I wish!

$1129? I had to laugh when I saw that, any idea what might be included in this formula? I’ve made $0 to date off the blog and the site is 100% free, so I’m surprised its worth anything at all.

My guess is the fomula relies on at least these two parameters:

1) How often you post
2) Do you ping Technorati on every post.

It’s ironic that Get Rich Slowly is the richest blog of the bunch.

Dammit! Have to work harder at the day job!

Ha! I love that calculator. It’s so funny to play with.

CC - I only update Technorati so I can see incoming links. It’s just interesting to see who is mentioning your site. Otherwise I really don’t care either.

Tim

Interesting, $8,000?

Even more interesting than what that widget says our blogs are worth, I’d like to see how much traffic and how much money each of those earns…. after all, that is the only real way to figure out the fundamental value of any blog…

IIRC, AOL purchased Weblogs for $x. The widget is based on figuring out how much each link to Weblogs is worth based on AOL’s purchase price. Multiply that by the number of links reported by Technorati, et voila!, you get the worth of each blog.

Thanks for including us, like other commentors Mike and I are eager to sell (for a valuation of $130K). Perhaps we can offer all of our blogs as a “package deal” then fight over the money between ourselves? ;-)

Congrats on the one year anniversary!!

So Quest For Four Pillars is worth three times as much as Canadian Capitalist? Sounds about right… :)

Mike

Well, if your blog was a business you could value it as such.
You could use a price/sales ratio to value it.
Or even a Price/Earnings ratio to value it.( but also subtract your hours worked on the blog times some hourly wage ( or a fixed monthly salary)).
My blog is worth $32,000 after 3 months of blogging. If anyone is interested I could sell it to them for 30,000 and would agree to write content for 9 more months. :-)

Honi soit the dazzlingly buy cytotec dead hand held.
